You probably saw the recent news story about the Florida man who died when part of his house was consumed by a sinkhole. This is a wake up call for homeowners in areas where the land on which their houses rest is adversely affected by water. Here at the Jersey Shore, we saw vast amounts of dangerous erosion due to Hurricane Sandy. Bay Head, Ortley Beach, and most beach towns along the coast still have the sand and dirt that was washed inland by the storm plaguing their communities. Residents have seen their driveways, walkways, and yards overcome with debris-filled sand that now has become a part of their landscape. Although these earthen materials washed up unwelcome to some, others whose homes lost their foundations in the washout just want it back. As seen in our spotlight project on our website's home page, Joe Wehner & Sons Contracting has been working with homeowners whose homes lost feet of vital earth that provided their houses with stability and strength. Without a strong foundation, these homes are susceptible to further damage, or in the worst case, collapse. It is imperative that what was washed away is once again filled in. |
